Bar Graph Worksheets

Looking for an interactive and meaningful way to teach data collection and graphing in your maths lessons? Our Transport Tally and Graphing Activity is a fun, whole-class investigation designed especially for Kindergarten to Year 2 students.

This resource combines movement, visual learning, tally marks, and graphing into one engaging lesson that students absolutely love.

What Is Included?

This free resource includes:

  • A PowerPoint presentation where different types of transport travel across the screen

  • An accompanying worksheet where students record their data

  • A graphing template for students to represent their findings

The PowerPoint also includes introductory slides explaining:

  • What data is

  • Why we collect data

  • Different ways we can represent data

  • How to use tally marks correctly

This makes it perfect for introducing or reinforcing early statistics and data concepts in a clear and student-friendly way.

How the Activity Works

1. Watch and Observe: Students watch as different types of transport (such as cars, buses, planes, and more) move across the screen.

2. Record Using Tally Marks: As each mode of transport appears, students record their observations using tally marks on their worksheet.

3. Count the Totals: After all the transport has travelled across the screen, students count their tally marks and record the totals.

4. Create a Graph: Students then use their data to construct a column graph, visually representing their results.

Why This Resource Works So Well

This lesson is:

  • Highly engaging and visualH

  • Perfect for whole-class participation

  • Ideal for introducing tally marks

  • Supportive of early graphing skills

  • Great for building mathematical discussion

Because students are watching real movement on the screen, the data collection feels exciting and purposeful. It also encourages rich follow-up questions such as:

  • Which transport appeared the most?

  • Which appeared the least?

  • Were any totals the same?

  • How many more cars were there than buses?

These discussions strengthen comparison skills and deepen understanding of data representation.
