Class Survey

Looking for a meaningful and hands-on way to teach data collection and graphing in your maths lessons? Our Class Survey printable is the perfect resource to help students explore real-life data in a fun and interactive way.

This ready-to-use worksheet encourages students to move around the classroom, ask questions, collect information, and then represent their findings using a column graph. It’s an engaging way to build confidence with statistics, tally marks, totals, and bar graphs in Year 1 and Year 2 classrooms.

What Is the Class Survey Resource?

The Class Survey worksheet is designed to help students learn how to:

  • Collect data from classmates

  • Record answers using tally marks

  • Calculate totals

  • Create a column graph

  • Interpret and discuss results

Students are provided with 9 predetermined survey questions to choose from, including fun and relatable topics such as:

  • What is your favourite pet?

  • What is your favourite ice cream flavour?

  • What is your favourite dessert?

Each question includes four possible answers, making it manageable and clear for young learners.

There is also a blank template page included, allowing students to create their own survey question. This encourages creativity, ownership of learning, and deeper thinking about how surveys work.

How the Worksheet Works

  1. Choose a Question: Students select one of the nine provided questions or use the template to create their own.

  2. Collect Data: Students move around the classroom asking their classmates the chosen question.

  3. Record Using Tally Marks: For each response, students add a tally to the table at the top of the page under the correct answer choice.

  4. Find the Total: Once all classmates have been surveyed, students count their tallies and record the total for each category.

  5. Create a Column Graph: Using the graph template at the bottom of the page, students represent their data visually by constructing a column graph.

This step-by-step structure makes the process clear and developmentally appropriate for early primary students.

Why Teachers Love This Resource

  • Encourages active learning and movement

  • Reinforces tally marks and counting skills

  • Builds understanding of data representation

  • Supports early graphing skills

  • Sparks meaningful maths discussions

Students naturally enjoy finding out what their classmates think, making the data personal and engaging. It also creates great opportunities for follow-up questions such as:

  • Which answer was the most popular?

  • Which answer was the least popular?

  • How many more students chose ___ than ___?

These discussions strengthen comparison skills and mathematical reasoning.

Perfect For:

  • Year 1 and Year 2 maths lessons

  • Introducing statistics and data

  • Small group rotations

  • Whole-class investigations

  • Fast finisher activities

  • Assessment tasks
