How Does the "Expanded Form" Resource Work?

Preparation:

Download the "Expanded Form" resource and print out the worksheets. Laminating the sheets allows for repeated use with dryerase markers, making it a durable addition to your teaching toolkit.

Interactive Learning:

In the center of the worksheet, teachers write a 3digit number in the circle.

Students then fill in the surrounding boxes to represent the number in four different ways.

Breakdown of the Worksheet

Hundreds, Tens, and Ones:

The first box requires students to write the number in terms of hundreds, tens, and ones. For example, for the number 376, students will write 3 hundreds, 7 tens, and 6 ones.

Place Value:

In the second box, students write the value of each digit. For 376, this would be 3 = 300, 7 = 70, and 6 = 6.

Expanded Form:

The third box has students write the number in expanded form. For 376, they will write 300 + 70 + 6 = 376.

MAB Blocks Representation:

The last box features pictures of MAB (Multibase Arithmetic Blocks). Students circle or color the blocks to visually represent the number.

Benefits of the "Expanded Form" Resource

Comprehensive Understanding:

By breaking down 3digit numbers into smaller components, students gain a deeper understanding of place value and number representation.

Versatile Use:

The resource can be used in various settings, including standalone lessons, math warmups, and as a fast finisher activity.

Engagement:

The interactive nature of the worksheet keeps students engaged and actively participating in their learning process.

Visual Learning:

The inclusion of MAB blocks helps visual learners grasp the concept of place value more effectively.
