Two Digit by 1 Digit Multiplication

Mastering multiplication is a critical skill for students in Year 3, Year 4, Year 5, and Year 6. As students advance in their understanding of numbers, they begin to tackle more complex multiplication problems, such as multiplying 2-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers when the numbers are written as an algorithm. To help support students in developing this skill, we’ve created a free anchor chart that breaks down the process into 4 simple steps.

This anchor chart is a fantastic visual aid that can be used in multiple ways to help students understand and practise multiplying 2-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers.

What’s on the Anchor Chart?

The anchor chart provides a step-by-step guide to solving these multiplication problems. Let’s break down the process using the example 45 x 3:

  • Step 1: Multiply the Ones Column
The first step is to multiply the digit in the ones place of the two-digit number by the one-digit number. For our example, students would start by multiplying 5 x 3, which equals 15.

  • Step 2: Regroup if Needed
After multiplying the ones column, students check to see if they need to regroup. In this case, they do. They would write the 5 under the ones column and carry over the 1 to the tens column.

  • Step 3: Multiply the Tens Column
Next, students multiply the digit in the tens column by the one-digit number. For our example, they would multiply 4 x 3, which equals 12.

  • Step 4: Regroup Again if Needed
After multiplying the tens column, students add the regrouped number from step 2. In our example, they would add 12 + 1, which equals 13. The 3 is written in the tens column, and the 1 is placed in the hundreds column, giving the final answer of 135.

This four-step process makes it easier for students to solve multiplication problems involving 2-digit numbers and 1-digit numbers. It also helps reinforce the concepts of place value, regrouping, and multi-step problem solving, which are all essential mathematical skills.

How to Use the Anchor Chart in the Classroom

The Multiplying 2-Digit Numbers by 1-Digit Numbers anchor chart can be used in several different ways to enhance students’ learning:

  • Classroom Display: Teachers can print the chart and display it in the classroom for students to refer to during lessons or independent work. The clear, step-by-step instructions make it an excellent resource for reinforcing multiplication strategies.

  • Workbook Inserts: Students can glue the anchor chart into their maths workbooks for easy reference while they practise. This way, they always have a guide on hand when solving multiplication problems.

  • Personal Study Guide: The chart can be printed and sent home as part of students' homework packages. It’s an excellent resource for parents who want to help their children review multiplication strategies at home.

  • Group Activity Aid: When working in small groups, students can use the anchor chart as a guide for group problem-solving activities. Each group member can take turns following the steps to solve different multiplication problems together.

  • Interactive Review: Teachers can print larger versions of the anchor chart and use it during interactive maths lessons. For example, students can take turns demonstrating each step on the board while solving problems as a class.

  • Maths Centres: Set up a multiplication station with the anchor chart displayed. Students can visit the station to solve multiplication problems, using the chart as a reference for extra guidance.

Why This Anchor Chart is Important

Learning to multiply 2-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers is a key milestone in a student’s mathematical development. This anchor chart simplifies the process by breaking it down into manageable steps. It also supports students who may struggle with regrouping, providing a clear and logical framework to follow.

The chart helps build confidence in students as they see their progress with each step they follow. It also reinforces their understanding of place value, a critical concept for success in later years. By having a reliable method to refer to, students can gradually move from needing guidance to independently solving more complex problems.
