Long and Short a

At Smart Boarding School, we are always looking for ways to make phonics practice more engaging and interactive. Today, we’re excited to introduce our free printable worksheet called "Long and Short a," specially designed for Year 1 and Year 2 students who are learning about the different vowel sounds of the letter a.

What’s Inside the Worksheet?

This worksheet focuses on helping young learners distinguish between the short a sound (as in “cat”)

and the long a sound (as in “cake”). At the top of the worksheet, there’s a simple table divided into two columns: one labeled Short a and the other Long a.

Below the table, you’ll find a selection of words containing both the short and long a sounds. Students are asked to cut out the words from the bottom of the worksheet and then glue them into the correct column. This hands-on activity encourages students to identify vowel sounds and sort words, building phonemic awareness and vocabulary in a fun and engaging way.

Why Use This Worksheet?

The "Long and Short a" worksheet is a great resource for:

  • Reinforcing the distinction between long and short vowel sounds

  • Developing word sorting and categorisation skills
