Long a Mystery Box

Teaching the long a sound? Looking for a fun, engaging way to help your Grade 1 and Grade 2 students master this important phoneme? The Long A Mystery Box game is just what you need! This free printable resource from Smart Boarding School turns phonics practice into an exciting two-player challenge that your students will love.

Why Focus on the Long A Sound?
The long a sound is one of the key vowel sounds young readers must learn to recognize and spell correctly. Because it can be spelled in multiple ways—a, ai, ay, and a_e—students need plenty of practice identifying and using these patterns in words. This game provides repeated exposure in a hands-on format that supports both recognition and application.
What’s the Long A Mystery Box Game?
The Long A Mystery Box game is an interactive spelling and reading activity where students draw cards with long a words, spell them, and score points based on how well they do. It’s a great way to reinforce phonics knowledge while keeping students engaged with a mix of strategy and chance.
What You’ll Need
To get started, print the following:
-
Page 2: A score board for each player (laminate for reuse with whiteboard markers)
-
Pages 3–10: Double-sided word cards featuring long a words (print back-to-back and cut them out)
How to Play
1. Lay Out the Cards: Place all 24 Mystery Box cards face down with the “mystery box” side facing up.
2. Take Turns:
-
Player 1 selects a card by pointing.
-
Player 2 picks up the card, reads the long a word aloud.
-
Player 1 writes the word on their score board.
3. Check the Spelling: If correct, Player 1 earns a point.
4. Keep or Discard: If Player 1 chooses to keep the card, they add or subtract points based on the number shown.
-
If they discard it, no points are gained or lost.
5. Repeat: Players alternate turns until all cards are used.
6. Winner: The player with the highest score at the end wins.
