Count the Bugs

Looking for a fun way to get your students up, moving, and practising their counting skills? Look no further than Count the Bugs, a playful activity that combines active learning with numeracy! Perfect for early years or lower primary students, this game encourages number recognition, counting accuracy, and physical activity, all while making maths engaging and enjoyable.

How to Play Count the Bugs

Count the Bugs is easy to set up and play, and it brings a lively twist to maths practice! Here’s how to get started:

1. Print and Prepare the Materials

  • Page 2: Print a copy for each student. This is their personal recording sheet where they’ll collect and write numbers.

  • Pages 3 – 12: Print and cut along the dotted lines. These pages contain images of different groups of bugs with corresponding numbers.

2. Set Up the Classroom or Learning Space

Place the cut-out bug cards from pages 3 – 12 around the classroom, playground, or any learning area. You can tape them to walls, hide them behind furniture, or scatter them creatively to make the hunt more exciting.

3. Let the Bug Hunt Begin!

  • Give each student a recording sheet.

  • Students walk around the space and search for the bug cards.

  • When they find a card, they count the number of bugs on it.

  • They carefully tear off the number from the bug card and glue it into one of the boxes on their recording sheet.

  • In the second box, they write the number themselves to reinforce number formation and recognition.

Why Choose Count the Bugs?

  • Promotes Active Learning: Combines counting practice with physical movement, helping students stay engaged and focused.

  • Develops Number Skills: Reinforces accurate counting, number recognition, and writing skills in a hands-on, fun way.

  • Encourages Independence: Students take ownership of their learning by moving around the room and making their own discoveries.

  • Adaptable for Different Spaces: Can be played in a classroom, playground, or even at home for a family maths challenge.
