Tally Marks

Are you introducing tally marks and data collection in your early years maths lessons? Our Tally Marks printable resource is a hands-on and engaging way to help Kindergarten and Grade 1 students learn how to record data accurately and confidently.

This 8-page worksheet pack encourages students to think like mathematicians as they create their own survey questions, collect real data from their classmates, and represent their findings using tally marks.

What Is the Tally Marks Resource?
The Tally Marks resource is designed to support young learners as they begin exploring:
-
Recording data
-
Using tally marks correctly
-
Counting totals
-
Creating and asking survey questions
-
Organising information in a table
Each of the 8 pages includes:
-
Space for students to write their own survey question
-
A table with four possible answer categories
-
A clear area to record data using tally marks
Students are encouraged to ask their question to 10 friends and record each response carefully.
How the Activity Works
-
Choose or Create a Question: Students think of a question that has four possible answers.
The first 7 pages include helpful prompts to guide younger learners. This structure provides scaffolding while still encouraging independent thinking.
2. Ask 10 Friends: Students move around the classroom asking their chosen question to 10 classmates. This makes the activity active, engaging, and highly motivating.
3. Record Using Tally Marks: As each friend answers, students add a tally mark in the correct column.
This gives valuable practice in:
-
Making tally marks correctly
-
Grouping tallies in fives
-
Counting efficiently
4. Open-Ended Challenge Page: The final page follows the same layout but does not include prompts. Students think of their own question and decide on four possible answers, allowing for creativity and deeper understanding of how surveys work.
