/j/ Mystery Box

Looking for a fun, no-prep way to build your students’ phonics and spelling skills? Our “J Mystery Box” game is the perfect tool to help Year 1 and Year 2 learners confidently read and spell words with the /j/ sound — spelled in a variety of ways including j, g, dge, and ge.

This free, hands-on game is full of learning, laughter, and a little bit of mystery — making it a favorite in both classrooms and at home.

What’s Included

To play, just print:

  • Page 2: The Mystery Box score board (one per player). Laminate to reuse with whiteboard markers.

  • Pages 3–10: Double-sided /j/ word cards featuring j, g, dge, and ge spellings. Print and cut them out.

 

How to Play the “J Mystery Box” Game

1. Set the Scene
Lay all word cards face down with the box image facing up.

2. Take Turns

  • Player 1 points to a card.

  • Player 2 picks it up and reads the /j/ word (for example: jug, giraffe, badge, cage).

  • Player 1 writes the word on their score board.

3. Check and Score

  • If spelled correctly, Player 1 earns 1 point.

  • Then, they choose to keep or discard the card:

    • Keep it and add or subtract the mystery points listed.

    • Discard it with no extra points added.

4. Alternate Turns
Keep playing until all cards have been used. The player with the most points wins.
