Class Survey

Teaching young learners how to collect, organise, and represent data can be incredibly rewarding—especially when the activity is meaningful and connected to their real world. Our free Class Survey resource is designed for Kindergarten and Grade 1 students who are just beginning to explore simple data concepts. This hands-on activity helps children learn how to ask a question, collect information from their classmates, record tally marks, and present their results in a clear column graph.

What Is the Class Survey Resource?

This printable resource gives students five ready-made yes/no questions to choose from:

  • Do you have a sister?

  • Do you have a brother?

  • Do you have a pet dog?

  • Do you like cheese?

  • Do you like carrots?

There is also an additional page where students can create their own yes/no question, adding a personal touch to their data investigation. Giving students choice increases engagement and helps them feel ownership over their learning.

How the Activity Works

The Class Survey is designed to be intuitive and student-friendly:

  1. Choose a Question: Students select one of the five provided yes/no questions—or write their own on the blank template.

  2. Ask Classmates: They move around the room and ask their peers the question, encouraging communication and confidence.

  3. Record Tally Marks: As each classmate answers yes or no, students record the data by making simple tally marks.

  4. Count the Responses: Once all tallies are collected, students count how many yes and no responses they received.

  5. Create a Column Graph: Students then fill in the column graph at the bottom of the page to represent their data visually.

This process introduces early learners to the entire data cycle—from collecting information to noticing patterns and representing results.

Why Teachers Love This Activity

The Class Survey resource supports key mathematical and personal development outcomes:

  1. Builds Early Data Skills: Students learn to count, group, record, and analyse information, laying a strong foundation for future statistics lessons.

  2. Encourages Speaking and Listening: Because students must talk to classmates, this activity naturally integrates oral language development.

  3. Easy to Implement: Just print the sheets and learners are ready to go—no extra materials are needed.

  4. Supports Classroom Community: Children learn more about one another in a friendly, structured way, helping to build a sense of belonging.

  5. Perfect for Differentiation: Students who are ready for a challenge can create their own survey question or conduct surveys with larger groups.

Ideas for Extending the Learning

If you’d like to take the activity further, here are some simple extension ideas:

  • Compare Results: Have students compare their graphs with a friend’s and describe similarities or differences.

  • Whole-Class Data Wall: Combine everyone’s tallies into one big class graph.

  • Write About Their Data: Add a literacy component by asking students to write one sentence about what they discovered.

  • Introduce Vocabulary: Teach key terms such as data, tally marks, survey, yes/no question, and graph.

  • Create a Gallery Walk: Display all completed surveys around the room so students can view a range of questions and results.

These activities deepen understanding and encourage students to think more critically about the information they collect.

Perfect for the Classroom, Home, or Homeschool

Whether you’re teaching in a busy classroom, supporting learning at home, or running a homeschool programme, the Class Survey resource is a simple and enjoyable way to introduce data collection. Children love asking questions, discovering answers, and creating graphs—and this resource turns those natural curiosities into meaningful maths learning.
